Black Spruce was won two awards at last weekend’s barleywine festival in Anchorage! Plus, a fresh collaboration is in the works!
Another year of a terrific Alaskan tradition, the Alaska Craft Brew & Barley Wine Festival (formerly the Great Alaskan Beer & Barleywine Festival) was last weekend in Anchorage! For the third year in a row, Black Spruce took home accolades! This year, both variations of our barrel-aged barleywine were awarded, with Bourbon Blend Barrel-Aged Reginald Van Horn Barleywine (‘23 Release) taking home first place in the barleywine category and Rye Blend Barrel-Aged Reginald Van Horn Barleywine (‘23 Release) taking home third place in the same category. Thank you to the festival organizers, competition judges and festival-goers for a great weekend!
Congratulations to this year’s fellow winners, Cynosure Brewing Company (2nd place barleywine, 3rd place winter warmer), 49th State Brewing Company (1st place winter warmer) and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (2nd place winter warmer)!
You can enjoy both of our award-winning barleywines by the glass at our taproom, and both are available in cans to-go (16oz singles). We’ve also got two variations of our prior award-winner, Barrel-Aged Long Nights Imperial Stout, available in cans to-go (16oz singles), along with plenty of non-barrel-aged options for you!
Collab Brew Day
This week, we teamed up with our friends at Fairbanks’ Lat 65 Brewing Company to brew our second collaboration together! We brewed our first collab last spring at Lat 65, and this time, we moved the party over to BSBC! Black Spruce brewer Carey Fristoe (left) and Lat 65 brewer Josh Evans (right) worked together to develop the recipe and make the wort, and it’ll be hitting our taps (but not Lat 65s, unfortunately, due to Alaska state law) in a few weeks! Stay tuned for details, and cheers to Fairbanks-brewed beer!

Upcoming Events
Brewery Brunch is held at our taproom every Saturday from noon until 3PM. Special brunch beer cocktails, like our spicy red beer, will be offered. We’ll also have fresh pastries from local bakeries like Marlo’s and Little Owl Cafe.
Our next First Friday will take place on Friday, March 1 and will feature returning artist Linda Wies and her gorgeous original woodblock prints!
Anchorage and Mat-Su accounts, we’re comin’ for ya! Our next round of Anchorage and Mat-Su deliveries will be on March 4 & 5. Stock up on your Black Spruce faves at your local bottle shop, then come and say “hi” to us at the festival!
